President Infinity – v. 3.3.5

Note: 3.1.1j is now ‘President Infinity Classic’. 3.3.5 is the latest official.

President Infinity v. 3.3.5 for Windows and Mac has been released!

This release adds Kanye West to 2020, adds the Editor > Leader > More Screen, adds the Editor > Leader > Surrogates Screen, allows editing Party and Leader colours, and more!

Note: if you have campaigns you have made from President Infinity Classic, it is recommended that you back these up first. Although there should be no problems loading and playing them, this simply errs on the side of caution. If the campaign formatting is unknown, the campaign will be re-written to disk using the new formatting without backing up the original version. If a campaign XML file’s syntax has to be updated, it will backup automatically, however.

See notes below. This version will not overwrite your existing Classic (3.1.1j) release install (if applicable), so you can play the new official version while still playing your previously installed Classic version.

Version 3.3.5 adds

  • 2020 > added Kanye West
  • Editor > confirms close
  • Editor > Leaders > added Move Up, Move Down buttons
  • Editor > Leaders > More button enabled, More Screen includes Funds, Goals, PAC, Veeps, Start options, Stays in until convention, Display position, PIPs
  • Editor > Leaders > Issues > added Export To Party, Import From Party buttons
  • Editor > Parties > added Change Color button
  • Editor > Leaders > added Change Color button
  • Editor > Leaders > Surrogates Screen added
  • Main Screen > Surrogate mode > shows surrogate image
  • Editor > Parties > fixed funds, block grant, highscore block grant bonus bug

Limited Editor. Save-load is considered an experimental feature right now (slow for typical games starting in the primaries, with save times in the minutes for a typical 2020 primaries start, and loads multiples of that).

Installation instructions:

Mac:

Download (see below) and double click on the zip file once downloaded.

1. Right click on the extracted app and select New Terminal at Folder. 

2. Copy and paste the following to the terminal line 

cd Contents/MacOS

then press enter. 

3. Then copy and paste the following to the terminal line

chmod +x *

then press enter. 

4. Then control-click on the app. Select ‘Open’ from the context menu (this is required the first time it is run). You may have to repeat this step, opening it twice this way.

Windows: download (see below) the zip file > right-click > Extract all > select location for extracted folder. Once it extracts, run the President Infinity file in the extracted folder.

Windows playing notes: Use Alt + Tab to switch back to your other apps when in the game. If it hangs, use Ctrl + Alt + Del > Task Manager > Processes > Apps > Infinity > right-click > End task.

If you are a President Infinity owner on subscription (or if you purchased President Infinity within the last year), you are eligible for this upgrade (if not, you can add a subscription here).

  1. Whilst I appreciate the attempt to port the game to this engine, there are a few concerns that come out of it for me.

    One that I personally find a glaring one (although less of an issue, more of a preference) is that there has been a major loss of aesthetic compared to the classic version. I was wondering if there is any intention to, once functionality is hammered out, look towards restoring the aesthetic or at least offering greater options in regards to the aesthetic. Especially on the electoral votes/delegates bar where I personally found the classic layout much more useful and much cleaner to look at.

    I find the complete lack of options regarding the monitor irritating. Whereas before the options were a bit clumsy but functional, this has been replaced with no options at all.

    Another issue I have ran into a few times is when switching between different electoral map modes, the side bar listing all candidates simply breaks and ends up stuck. I found this occur in the 1912, a custom 1964 and the 2004 mapmode. Breaking with me stuck looking at a parties primary race.

    The combination of graphical changes which I find making it harder to play, simply liking the look of the game less now and glitches on the mapmode switch leave me desiring to continue playing President Infinity Classic. Especially as updates are a subscription service and would cost the full game to have them by the next election cycle, I am currently preferring the game without updates. If this leads me into running a depreciated version of the game then so be it.

    Yes. I’ve implemented what are basically the most straightforward options for various aspects of the port. Yes, the bars’ look you mention will be upgraded.

    Can you say more about this? The most recent version allows for switching between full-screen and windowed, and once in windowed you can modify the size as you see fit.

    I’ve noted the problem you have experienced with the side bar.

  3. Thank you for your response, I did worry I had come off a little harsh so I’m glad to see a jolly response. I can look at the windowed thing, that may be on me for just missing it. I understand that this seems to be early stages of transfer to a new engine, and as someone who does programming in my own time from time to time, I really respect the effort you must be putting in for the transfer and keeping people posted.

    I am also glad to hear a response.

    Upon a little further testing, I can’t give clear instructions on how to replicate the sidebar issue, but I can say it appears to be far more common in custom scenarios for some reason.

    OK, thanks for this re side bar issue – that’s interesting.

    The aesthetic is a bit ironic at this point, as the port is using Unity, which is much more capable graphically than the old system. But utilizing Unity’s graphical functionality will take a bit more time.
