Understanding Ad Power

An ad’s Power determines how much of an impact it has when run.

There are several things that affect an ad’s Power.

  1. Base Power: different ads have different base Power ratings, usually the more expensive ads have a higher Base Power.
  2. Attack: certain ad types have a bonus if you are attacking another player, however attack ads have a chance of backfiring.
  3. Localization: ads localized to a specific seat have a Power bonus (for example, in Senate 2010, ads localized to a specific seat have +2 compared to ads that can run in the entire country). To create a localized ad, in the Ads Screen select the seat you want the ad localized to, and then create an ad.
  4. Theme: if the ad is about an issue and candidate that is in your Theme, then the Theme bonus is added to the ad’s Power.
  5. Issue: you get a bonus (or penalty) for how far from the political center your platform issue position is in the district, state, and so on, in which the ad is being run. When you click to select the issue, a screen will be shown with the bonuses (or penalties) for selecting that issue with whoever is selected for the ad to be about. If the ad is about another player, then the bonuses are related to their platform issue position, if the ad is about yourself, the bonuses are about your platform issue position.

Note: An ad’s Power creates Momentum on an issue, which is then multipled by the issue it is about’s Profile. So, a Power 6 ad on a Profile Low issue is effectively 6 x 1 = 6. A power 3 ad on a Profile Very High issue is effectively 3 * 4 = 12, or twice as powerful.

Scandals

There are two kinds of scandal. The first is a national scandal. You can create a national scandal by clicking the ‘Research’ button on the main screen, and then clicking ‘Research new Inisight or Scandal.’ Once this scandal is complete, you can release it by clicking the ‘Research’ button on the main screen, and clicking ‘Leak’. This causes a national scandal news story.

The second kind of scandal is a district scandal. You can create a district scandal by clicking the ‘Strategy’ button on the main screen, clicking on the district you want to research a scandal for, and clicking the ‘View Research’ button on that district’s Seat Info screen. Then click ‘Research new Insight or Scandal’. Once it is complete, you can release it by going back to that district’s Seat Info screen, clicking ‘View Research’, and then clicking ‘Leak’.

Once a district scandal is released, it creates a scandal at the district level. You can view this by going to the district’s Seat Info screen, and you can spin the scandal to help increase its Power. Once a district scandal’s Power has reached 10, it causes a national scandal news story. It only causes a national news story once.

Understanding the Constituency Screen

The funds for each candidate represent the amount transferred and not used by a candidate, and the amount that can still be transferred. Funds transferred from outside the committee (PACs, for example), will also show up here.

So, if it says:

Thad McCotter $10,000 ($90,000)

that means that McCotter has $10,000 in unused transferred funds, and the player can still transfer $90,000 to McCotter.

Understanding the Platform Screen

The ‘I’ cross-bars indicate the political center for that political unit (district, state, or the country). The colored carrot (blue for Democrat, red for Republican) represents that party’s position on an issue.
